Out of the Woods Music Video

Taylor Swift debuted her "Out of the Woods" music video from her 1989 album December 31, 2015 on Ryan Secrest's Rockin' New Year's Eve celebration.

Here's the video with the words that appeared on the screen before and after the video:

SHE LOST HIM

BUT SHE FOUND HERSELF, AND SOMEHOW THAT WAS EVERYTHING

The video is amazing.  It shows Taylor in the same blue dress the whole time, but shows her facing different elements; water, fire, snow, earth, air.  The music video was directed by Joseph Kahn.  I think this was their best collaboration yet, probably because it's one of my favorite songs.  The music video also features elements from the song "Clean", the beginning and ending text for the video are from the liner notes for the song, "Clean".  And at her 1989 World Tour Concert the video background was Taylor in the water for most of the song, like some of the elements in "Out of the Woods" video.

In the beginning of the video Taylor is scared, the woods are starting to grow on the beach.  She is then in the woods with the vines still growing and the wolves are chasing after her.  It is getting thick and cold.  She falls down and the wolves grab her dress.  The next part she is on top of a cliff through the air, but this time she is walking with the wolves, not as scared of them anymore.  She is walking barefoot through the snow, which had to be cold.  She rips off her paper airplane necklace and with the wolves behind her she throws it over the ledge, she then falls off the edge into water and then is on a barren wasteland with a single tree.  She walks to it and it becomes an icy tree.  Her hand become icy, and then her whole body is icy and it breaks.  She is then running again through the mud, then crawls through the mud.  The trees grow around her, and now she is not muddy, but part of the tree.  There are fireflies all around.  In the end there are scenes from all of these trials she went through, the snow, dessert, mud, cliff, water, snow, fire and the tree in the end.  These trials are how she found herself.  Gradually through the video Taylor is becoming more and more confident with the wolves and herself and is not afraid anymore.  The woods disappear and all of the sudden Taylor is walking towards herself.

Perhaps the most poignant moment is when Taylor finds herself in the end.  She is on the beach and another version of herself walks up to her and touches her shoulder. She went through all these trials, but she is finally clean and out of the woods.

What does all this mean?  The wolves are the reporters, media and paparazzi.  At first she was scared of them, but after a while Taylor has become a master of using them to her advantage.  The elements all represent the same things, but by using all the elements she shows how hard that was. She was going through a really hard time in her life before she wrote 1989.  It was not just the relationship with Harry Styles, but relationships with others, the portrayal in the media, her own label not wanting to let her do pop music, an probably more things the public does not even know. The iciness represents how lifeless and out of control things were for her, but when the ice broke the control people had over her did too. She had to drag herself through the mud and embrace it to become a beautiful tree. She embraced the cliff and jumped off of it, symbolizing taking chances and risks.  She did not drown when she came out, but was in a dessert. It is interesting to note the fire was only present in the end sequence signifying a cleaning a release of all the things that had held her back.

In the end, Taylor found herself, and she did what she wanted for the first time in a long time.  She produced the record she wanted to, she figured out how to handle her fame, she was really happy with who she was and she was finally clean. I'm glad she found herself and is so happy, she definitely deserves it!

Taylor Swift 1989 World Tour Live

It's over, Taylor Swift's 1989 world tour is over. I can not believe it went by so quickly. But never fear, unlike the Red Tour era, which we sadly have no tour video, there is a 1989 World Tour video, available on Apple music.  I am thrilled.  It is so exciting watching it over and over again.  My favorite sets were the Wildest Dreams/Enchanted set, the Out of the Wood set and How You Get the Girl set.

Here's the complete set list.
  1. "Welcome to New York"
  2. "New Romantics"
  3. "Blank Space"
  4. "I Knew You Were Trouble"
  5. "I Wish You Would"
  6. "How You Get the Girl"
  7. "I Know Places"
  8. "All You Had to Do Was Stay"
  9. "You Are in Love"
  10. "Clean"
  11. "Love Story"
  12. "Style"
  13. "This Love"
  14. "Bad Blood"
  15. "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"
  16. "Enchanted" / "Wildest Dreams"
  17. "Out of the Woods"
  18. "Shake It Off"
Taylor had some amazing guests on her tour. A lot of these guests performed for free and some of them on their time off, like Mick Jagger.  Taylor heard he was in Nashville from her father, texted him, and he said yes, just worrying about what he was going to wear.  She invited them a variety of ways, she texted her friends and had her management reach out to others. Instead of having them perform her songs with her, she had the visiting artist perform their song.  Taylor and her band learned all the new songs very quickly. What's amazing about it being filmed is the video quality is ten times better than YouTube.

Here are the songs each artist performed with her with links to listen to the original song on Apple music.
If I Die Young - The Band Perry

Every Mile a Memory - Dierks Bentley

Perfect by One Direction with Lyrics

Today's song is the meaning of the new song by One Direction called "Perfect" from their album Made In The A.M., probably written by Harry Styles.  It's an answer to Taylor Swifts' 1989 album and all about her.  It is surprisingly a nice song.

It really reminds me of "Wildest Dreams". We see why the relationship did not work, but from Harry's perspective. Basically Harry wasn't ready to commit, "he's not good at making promises". He might not be her "knight in shining armor", the one she takes "home to mother", or "brings you flowers". He won't be the person she puts her heart into, and his "arms won't hold you anytime you want to".  But he will show her a good time, "be the one tonight" "causing trouble in hotel rooms". They can have "secret little rendezvous", doing "things you know that we shouldn't do".  They drove at midnight "with the windows down".  This is a reference to the song "Style".  They went to "places we can't even pronounce".  This made me laugh, they were globetrotting like crazy and shows his personality. Sounds a little bit like "I Know Places" right? Where Taylor talks about being able to hide from the paparazzi.  He does call Taylor out and says cameras will flash "every time that we go out" and if she needs "someone to write your breakup songs about", he will be fine with that.  This is probably the meanest comment he said about her in the song, but it is not really mean.  He says he was fine with the cameras and the songs, he knows what he is getting into when he starts dating her.   Basically the whole song is saying they were never going to get "Out of the Woods" because he didn't want to commit. If she wanted to have fun that would be perfect.

They just wanted different things, she wanted commitment, he didn't.

I've become more of a fan of One Direction over the years, this is a pretty good song. I have listened to it like 20 times already. It will be interesting to see if there are more songs about Taylor on the album...

Perfect Lyrics
One Direction

[Verse 1: Louis]
I might never be your knight in shining armor
I might never be the one you take home to mother
And I might never be the one who brings you flowers
But I can be the one, be the one tonight

[Refrain: Liam]
When I first saw you
From across the room
I could tell that you were curious (Oh, yeah)
Girl, I hope you’re sure
What you're looking for
‘Cause I'm not good at making promises

[Chorus: Harry]
But if you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms
And if you like having secret little rendezvous
If you like to do the things you know that we shouldn’t do
Baby, I'm perfect
Baby, I'm perfect for you
And if you like midnight driving with the windows down
And if you like going places we can’t even pronounce
If you like to do whatever you've been dreaming about
Baby, you're perfect
Baby, you're perfect
So let's start right now

[Verse 2: Niall]
I might never be the hands you put your heart in
Or the arms that hold you any time you want them
But that don’t mean that we can’t live here in the moment
‘Cause I can be the one you love from time to time

[Refrain: Liam]
When I first saw you
From across the room
I could tell that you were curious (Oh, yeah)
Girl, I hope you’re sure
What you're looking for
Cause I'm not good at making promises

[Chorus: Harry]
But if you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms
And if you like having secret little rendezvous
If you like to do the things you know that we shouldn’t do
Baby, I'm perfect
Baby, I'm perfect for you
And if you like midnight driving with the windows down
And if you like going places we can’t even pronounce
If you like to do whatever you've been dreaming about
Baby, you're perfect
Baby, you're perfect
So let's start right now

[Bridge]
And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out
(Oh, yeah)
And if you're looking for someone to write your breakup songs about
Baby, I'm perfect
Baby, we're perfect

[Chorus: Harry]
But if you like causing trouble up in hotel rooms
And if you like having secret little rendezvous
If you like to do the things you know that we shouldn’t do
Baby, I'm perfect
Baby, I'm perfect for you
And if you like midnight driving with the windows down
And if you like going places we can’t even pronounce
If you like to do whatever you've been dreaming about
Baby, you're perfect
Baby, you're perfect
So let's start right now

Wildest Dreams

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "Wildest Dreams" from her 1989 album.

Wildest Dreams is right in line with the rest of Taylor Swift's 1989 album.  This album for me is about a girl who has been under intense scrutiny from the media for years.  She has seen many relationships come and go and made even worse by the media.  Taylor says in her stories behind in the songs in October 2014, "Wildest Dreams is kind of a good example of the way that my outlook on love has changed. Over the years I think as you get more experience under your belt, as you become disappointed a few times, you start to kind of think of things in more realistic terms. It's not like you meet someone and that's it.  If they like you and you like them well it's going to be forever of course. I don't really look at love like that anymore. The way I see love is kind of a little more fatalistic which means to me that when I meet someone and we have a connection, the first thought I really have is when this is over I hope you think well of me."

Source: Taylor Swift Instagram
She told Rolling Stone in September 2014, "I think the way I used to approach relationships was very idealistic. I used to go into them thinking, 'Maybe this is the one — we'll get married and have a family, this could be forever.' Whereas now I go in thinking, 'How long do we have on the clock — before something comes along and puts a wrench in it, or your publicist calls and says this isn't a good idea?'"

Who is this song about?

This song is about Harry Styles.  Continuing from the quote above "So this song is about having that immediate connection with someone and these were my vivid thoughts right as I met him." Interestingly enough he wrote a song in rebuttal to this album, "Perfect".  Click here for the analysis of this song.

She had this immediate connection with Harry Styles, but unfortunately she knew it wasn't going to last because of all the tabloid exploitation.  They jetsetted around the world, but living on two different continents, going on tours, promoting albums makes it very hard to be together.  Whenever they were together they were photographed like crazy, they could never really be alone and develop that relationship. They were naive and thought they needed to be in these exotic places to develop their relationship, when in reality they just needed to find a quiet place to be together. I feel very bad for Taylor for what goes on with her relationships.  When you are a celebrity like she is it is very hard to start a relationship, every time she is even in a picture with someone else it sparks the rumor mill.  Obviously she must be really into every guy she has a 5 minute chat with.  As I've said before, I'm so glad my life was not like that, it's hard enough to date as is, without that wrench thrown in the mix.

In the song she talks about things they did together, how "his voice is a familiar sound". He's "tall" and "handsome" and "this is getting good know". But in her head she knows, "Nothing lasts forever", she "can see the end as it begins".  Then the whole point of the song comes up "My one condition is...Say you'll remember me...Even it it's just in your Wildest Dreams".  Then "say you'll see me agian/If it's just pretend".  She wants the memories of her to "follow you around" and remember her "standing in a nice dress/staring at the sunset". She is acknowledging with her life it is hard to have romance, but she is going to enjoy it while it's around.

Fortunately Taylor's outlook on love has changed, which I am so glad for.  When 1989 came out it reminded me how I found the one. I was super jaded from dating so many guys and watching them find their own one, with me being left on the sidelines. I did not want to date at all.  Taylor was so this way. Numerous times she said she did not know what love was like and was happy being alone, that to break her from her happy singleness she would have to meet an amazing guy.  I loved the music from 1989, but I did not like Taylor's outlook.  I felt really bad for her.  I am so glad she found Calvin Harris, aka Adam Wiles.  They have spent so much time together and become so close.  They have both learned that they need to keep their relationship out of the public eye as much as possible in order to develop their relationship.  Relationships are fragile and need to be nurtured. Another positive thing they have been doing is controlling what they release.  They release the pictures, they release the quotes, via their twitter or interviews.  One of my favorite pictures they released together is this swan picture.  They have having such a good time and I hope it lasts forever!

Wildest Dreams Music Video

Taylor released the Wildest Dreams music video at the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards on August 30, 2015.  This is my favorite music video from the 1989 era. This video is so reminiscent of other videos that Taylor has done.  There is a story.  Two actors are filming a movie in Africa, they have a relationship of sorts and really enjoy their time together.  When they attend the premiere Taylor finds out that he is now married and longs for their relationship they had while filming.  She runs away from the premiere heartbroken. This video is like You Belong to Me, Love Story and Story of Us all rolled into one, and is really what Taylor does best, story telling. There are many little details within the video that can be discovered with multiple viewings. The music video really enhances the song and endears the song even more.  There is an ode to the Style video with a shot of the eye at the beginning a prominent shot in the Style video, which many fans felt was more like a Wildest Dreams video.  Good job Taylor!

As a plus all the proceeds from the video will go to the African Parks Foundation of America.

I Know Places

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "I Know Places" from her 1989 album.

When I first heard this song I thought it was probably the least relatable song on the 1989 album. The whole concept of the song is the paparazzi and press are these vultures "circling", with cages, boxes and guns that take shots at her. "They are the hunters, we are the foxes".  Taylor has lived her life under the spotlight for years and her every move is tracked. This kind of life sounds crazy.  I can not imagine someone tracking my EVERY move, and twisting all the words I say. She is a pro at dealing with it, a pro.  In the Rolling Stone article form September 2014 she says, 'There's someone whose entire job it is to figure out things that I don't want the world to see. They look at your career, they look at what you prioritize, and they try to figure out what would be the most revealing or hurtful." I can't even imagine what that would be like.  I really can't believe there are people out there like that.  Why do they have to make her life harder?  She is a person too right?

Who is this song about?

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles in Central Park in December 2012, Taylor is wearing a foxes sweater...
Yes I tried to mislead you with the picture, this song is not about Harry Styles.  Taylor says in her song by song analysis.  "This is a song about how other people will really ruin a relationship if they get a chance to, and how it might be the best way to go about starting a relationship to keep it a secret as possible, just because it's very fragile. I think that this was a song that I wrote about sort of how covert it would have to be in order for me to ever make something work eventually."

Interestingly enough he wrote a song about Taylor in rebuttal to her album, "Perfect".  Click here for the meaning of that song.

In June 2015 she told Elle magazine, " 'I figured the way that they’d be able to relate to 'I Know Places' is like when you’re in high school and start dating someone and you really like him. And you go to your friends, 'Oh my God, I like this guy!' And they’re like, ‘Who?’ And you’re like, ‘Trevor.’ And they’re like, ‘Trevor’s, like, a weirdo emo kid, I heard his parents are swingers… Oh my God, why are you talking to Trevor? Trevor paints his nails with a Sharpie…’ And you’re like, ‘But I like Trevor.’ And then all of a sudden, people tell everybody, ‘Oh my God, Stacy likes Trevor! Oh my God, that’s so weird—maybe we shouldn’t hang out with Stacy anymore.’ It’s the same dichotomy of what happens to me when I’m like, ‘I like this guy.’ And they’re like, ‘Oh Taylor, no! Not him.’ I felt on some level we go through the same stupid social complexities. And I just knew that I’m not the only one who goes through that, that’s not unique to my situation. And I always wanted to write about foxes, to be honest. When I came up with that line—’They are the hunters, we are the foxes and we run’—I was just like, ‘This is going on the album no matter what. Foxes? Check.’ And they like that line, so I’m happy about that.’ "

After I read this quote I realated to this song more.  There was an instance in college where I liked a boy and I think he liked me too, but then his friends made fun of him and boom all of the sudden he was scared.  I can only imagine this is what happened with Harry Styles.  They were jetsetting around the world, Park City, New York City, LA, London, tropical vacations.  They were just in the spotlight too much and EVERYBODY recognized them and reported them.  Their every move was tracked.

Taylor took a very long time off dating, but I am SO GLAD that she decided to give dating a second chance, she looks so happy with Calvin Harris now.  They seem to be taking their relationship slower and more out of the spotlight, which is incredibly good for them.  Good luck Taylor and Calvin, I'm cheering for you and I hope you have found all the right places to get that fire burning strong!

Calvin is in the following picture, but guess where they are? Not in the public eye, but in her kitchen, building that strong connection away from the public eye!
