Out of the Woods Lyrics

Out of the Woods Lyrics (1989 Album)

Written by Taylor Swift/Jack Antonoff

Looking at it now
It all seems so simple
We were lying on your couch
I remember
You took a Polaroid of us
Then discovered
The rest of the world was black and white
But we were in screaming color
And I remember thinking…

Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good.
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods yet?
Are we out of the woods?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
Are we in the clear yet?
In the clear yet, good.
Are we out of the woods?

Looking at it now
Last December, we were built to fall apart
Then fall back together
Your necklace hanging from my neck
The night we couldn’t quite forget
When we decided
To move the furniture so we could dance
Baby, like we stood a chance
Two paper airplanes flying, flying…
And I remember thinking

Chorus

Remember when you hit the brakes too soon
Twenty stitches in a hospital room
When you started crying
Baby, I did too
But when the sun came up
I was looking at you
Remember when we couldn’t take the heat
I walked out, I said “I’m setting you free”
But the monsters turned out to be just trees
When the sun came up
You were looking at me.
You were looking at me… Oh
You were looking at me.
I remember.
Oh, I remember..

Chorus

"I Know Places", "You Are In Love", and "Wildest Dreams"

Today's Taylor Swift songs are the introductory meanings of "I Know Places", "You Are In Love", and "Wildest Dreams".  Rolling Stone did it again and released three new song titles today in a follow up article 22 Things You Learn Hanging Out With Taylor Swift on September 10, 2014.

Who are they about?

"Wildest Dreams" is Taylor's take on love. Taylor tells Rolling Stone "I think the way I used to approach relationships was very idealistic. I used to go into them thinking, 'Maybe this is the one — we'll get married and have a family, this could be forever.' Whereas now I go in thinking, 'How long do we have on the clock — before something comes along and puts a wrench in it, or your publicist calls and says this isn't a good idea?'"

"You do feel a little bit like you got run over by a truck. You'll be riding in the car with someone and all of a sudden it comes on the radio that he bought you a diamond ring and he's going to propose. And you look at him and go, '...that's not true, right?' And he says, 'No that's not true!' Can you blame me for wanting less of that?"

I'm so sorry Taylor. Dating is no fun.  I really, really, really wouldn't want to to it in the public eye.  I really HOPE you can find someone that doesn't care about any of that and you can just have fun being yourselves.

She did have a glimmer of hope later in the interview.  When asked if she'd ever been in love she said, "Looking back? Not real love. Not the kind that lasts. I think that's still ahead of me — which is really exciting."

"You Are In Love" is a song that was cowritten with Jack Antonoff.  He says it has "a very 'Secret Garden' Springsteen vibe." I have an updated analysis of this song here.

"I Know Places" was cowritten with Ryan Tedder.

Thank you Rolling Stone for releasing more music titles!!! I can't wait to hear them.

Interestingly enough Harry Styles wrote a song about Taylor in rebuttal to her album, "Perfect".  Click here for the meaning of that song.

"Bad Blood", "I Wish You Would", "All You Had to Do Was Stay", "Style",and "Out of the Woods" Introduction

Today's Taylor Swift SONGS are the introductory meanings of the songs; "Bad Blood", "I Wish You Would", "All You Had to Do Was Stay", "Style", and "Out of the Woods" from her 1989 album. They are featured in the Rolling Stone article, "The Reinvention of Taylor Swift" from September 8, 2014.

Who is each one about?

The Rolling Stone article gives us some clues.

"Bad Blood" is about Katy Perry   Taylor told Rolling Stone, "For years, I was never sure if we were friends or not. She would come up to me at awards shows and say something and walk away, and I would think, 'Are we friends, or did she just give me the harshest insult of my life?'" Then last year, the other star crossed a line. "She did something so horrible, I was like, 'Oh, we're just straight-up enemies.' And it wasn't even about a guy! It had to do with business. She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I'm surprisingly non-confrontational – you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now I have to avoid her. It's awkward, and I don't like it."

She wanted to make sure people knew it was not about a boy, "But I just want people to know it's not about a guy. You don't want to shade someone you used to date and make it seem like you hate him, when that's not the case. And I knew people would immediately be going in one direction." (Rolling Stone)

Katy stole some of Taylor's dancers and crew from her tour.  An ex dancer of Taylor's Lockhart Brownlie, who formally danced with Katy told Manika Dadson Dec. 20, 2013, "I was with Taylor for the first six months. It was a great experience and she's a great person to work with, but then Katy contacted us." And the rest is history, or a song in this case. Click here for a detailed analysis of this song.

"I Wish You Would" is "about an ex who bought a house two blocks from" Taylor's place. (Rolling Stone)

"All You Had to Do Was Stay" is "about a guy who was never willing to commit (ditto)." (Rolling Stone). Click here for a detailed analysis of this song.

"Style" is "a sexy Miami Vice-sounding throwback about a guy with slicked-back hair and a white T-shirt and a girl in a tight little skirt." (Rolling Stone) Click here for a detailed analysis of this song.

"Out of the Woods" (click here for the updated analysis of "Out of the Woods")  is quite possibly the song I am most excited for from this new group.  It is "a frantic tale" about her relationship with Harry Styles where she says "'every day was a struggle. Forget making plans for life – we were just trying to make it to next week.'" They even ended up in the hospital following a snowmobile accident in Utah in December 2012 because he "lost control and wrecked it so badly that she saw her life flash before her eyes." They both had to go to the ER, but Taylor wasn't hurt as bad.  She said that they went to the hospital and asked everyone to not say anything, and no one did.  (You revealed your own secret Taylor!)
Harry had a banged up chin, "Remember when you hit the brakes too soon/Twenty stitches in a hospital room." (lyrics from "Out of the Woods"). (Rolling Stone)

I am so excited for all the new songs and can't wait to hear all of them! Don't forget I'll include some more detail analysis once we have the songs in hand.

"Shake It Off"

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of the first single from her new album 1989, "Shake It Off". This song is extra special for me because I was at the Yahoo live stream in New York City August 18th, 2014 when it was released. I was also there the first time she heard it in the radio in her house and then also danced to it in her kitchen by the refrigerator with her.

I don't know about you, but with all new Taylor songs it takes me a while to get used to them and then I love them. I love them the more I learn about why she wrote them and the meaning behind the song. It was so fun to dance with her to this song at the live stream, but I really didn't appreciate it until I heard why she wrote it and thought about it more.

Who is this song about?

This song is about Taylor! During the last couple of years she has gotten a lot of flack for dating lots of guys, most notably Carrie Underwood at the 2012 CMA Awards when she and Brad Paisely joked about her split from Conor and Amy Poeler/Tina Fey at the Golden Globes when they joked she should stay away from Michael J Fox's son. There have also been numerous articles about her love life. Let me just tell you right now I went on just as many dates as Taylor or more, but I wasn't under the same amount of scrutiny and am glad for that. I don't know if I could have handled it the way she does.

In her Good Morning America interview August 18, 2014 Taylor said,

"The message in the song is a problem I think we all deal with and an issue we deal with on a daily basis. We don't like just in a celebrity takedown culture, we live in a takedown culture. People will find anything about you and twist it to where it's weird or wrong or annoying or strange or bad. You have to not only live your life in spite of people who don't understand you; you have to have more fun than they do."

I think it's amazing that she is able to just "shake" off all the negativity and that she had this music in her mind telling her everything's going to be okay.

In the rap portion of the song, she references Harry styles with is new girlfriend, Kendall Jenner, "My ex man brought his new girlfriend". He is the also the player that is referenced in the song. "Players going to play", and he certainly does that. I don't blame her for not staying with him.

Taylor has really shown that she is just dancing it off and dancing to her own beat. At numerous award shows and concerts she is the liveliest one in the audience. Taylor I am so glad you are able to shake off all the players and haters and know that everything's going to be alright!

"Shake It Off" Lyrics

Shake It Off Lyrics

Shake It Off Lyrics (1989 Album)

Written by Swift/Martin/Shellback

I stay up too late
Got nothing in my brain
That's what people say
That's what people say
I go on too many dates
But I can't make them stay
At least that's what people say
That's what people say

But I keep cruising
Can't stop, won't stop moving
It's like I got this music
In my mind, saying it's gonna be alright
Cause the players gonna play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate
Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off
Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break
And I think it's gonna fake, fake, fake
Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off, Shake it off

I never miss a beat
I'm lighting up my feet
And that's what they don't see
That's what they don't see
I'm dancing on my own
I make the moves as I go
And that's what they don't know
That's what they don't know

But I keep cruising
Can't stop, won't stop moving
It's like I got this music
In my mind, saying it's gonna be alright
Cause the players gonna play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate
Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off
Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break
And I think it's gonna fake, fake, fake
Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off, Shake it off

Hey, hey, hey
Just think while you been getting down and out about the liars
And the dirty dirty cheats of the world
You could have been getting down to this sick beat

My ex man brought his new girlfriend
She's like oh my god
But I'm just gonna shake
And to the fella over there with the hella good hair
Won't you come on over baby we could shake, shake

Cause the players gonna play, play, play
And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate
Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off. Shake it off
Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break
And I think it's gonna fake, fake, fake
Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake
Shake it off, Shake it off
Shake it off
Shake it off
Shake it off
Shake it off

Eyes Open

Today's Taylor Swift song is "Eyes Open" from the Hunger Games soundtrack. This is my favorite song on the soundtrack. I love the sound, the words, just everything about it. Taylor describes it as "more frantic and fast-paced, a completely different shade of music.”  I love that shade. Hopefully with album 5 we'll hear more songs like this. I also wish they had made a music video for the song.

Who is this song about?

It's about Katniss Everdeen from the Huger Games.

Taylor says, “I wrote it about Katniss’ relationship with the Capitol. It basically serves as a warning for her not to trust anyone-in many ways the opposite of ‘Safe & Sound.'"

Taylor read the Hunger Games before she wrote the songs so she really delved into Katniss's character. In the Hunger Games 24 kids are chosen from each district, some are chosen by lottery, some train for it their whole lives. They all head to the Capital for the annual Hunger Games. The competitors are placed in an arena with cameras filming their every move.  Everybody is really "watching to see the fallout". Their main goal is to kill all the other competitors. If they do this they get to live the rest of their life within their district. She's never safe in the arena, she's got to

"Keep [her] feet ready
Heartbeat steady
Keep [her] eyes open
Keep your aim locked
The night goes dark
Keep [her] eyes open"

She has got to be on her guard all the time. Katniss's survival skill both back at home and in the arena is her bow and arrow, hence keeping her "aim locked". Not only are the other competitors trying to kill them, but the capital is always sending hardships to bear and to make their battle harder. From each "lesson" or experience Katniss "forms a new scar", she gets hurt. But even though "they've surrounded" her with trials and competitors she's "got something they don't" and survives. She is smart, "two steps ahead staying on guard" even though "they never thought [she'd] make it this far. But she does and even though she has no one to "come to save" her she has the heart and the ingenuity to get through and inspire everyone. She ends up not only saving herself, but Peeta, a fellow competitor, district member, and her best friend by outsmarting the capital.

This song really shows how Katniss makes it through the games by keeping her "Eyes Open".

Crazier

Today's Taylor Swift song is the song, "Crazier" from the Hannah Montana movie soundtrack.  When this movie came out I loved all of the songs in the movie including, "The Climb."  I even went to Miley's concert because of it.  Alas I was sorely disappointed with her concert, I couldn't hear her very well, her voice was horrible and she had already started to rebel from her Disney ways.  Taylor had come into town around the same time and I wish I'd chosen to go to her concert instead.

This song is a prominent song in the movie.  Taylor tells GAC, "I wrote this in song in hopes that possibly it would be in the movie, but I never thought it would be such a big prominent song.  It's absolutely one of the most exciting things. This song is playing when the main characters of the movie, Miley and Billy Ray are both falling in love with that song as a background.  It's really cool to have that kind of a part in the movie."

But Taylor didn't just write it for the movie, she wrote it a lot earlier.  Who was this song about originally?

Okay that was a trick question, it isn't about anyone per se, but Taylor's idea of love.  Taylor tells GAC in the Behind the Scene's Hannah Montana Movie (Taylor Swift), "I wrote the song crazier when I was thirteen so this song is really a reflection of what I thought love was supposed to be, and you know sometimes you write a love song about what you hope will find you and what you hope you'll find someday, not about what you're actually going through."

I couldn't believe it.  She wrote this song when she was thirteen?  And just pulled it out of her pocket and hadn't released it yet?  I wonder how many songs Taylor has hiding out.  I would love to hear them all, as I am sure many of you would love to too.  The song is very in touch with being in love,

"There's so much more/I've never seen it before/I was trying to fly/But I couldn't find wings/But you came along and you changed everything"

"You showed me something that I couldn't see/You opened my eyes/And you made me believe"

"Baby you showed me what living is for"

"Feels like I'm fallin' and I am lost in your eyes/You make me crazier, crazier, crazier"

I love this song even though I don't love Hannah Montana anymore. It just makes me want to dance around being, "Crazier".  I really hope you find that person that makes you "crazier" Taylor.

Mine

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "Mine" from her "Speak Now" album.

I first heard this song before I became a Taylor Swift fan.  Yeah I remember hearing "Teardrops On My Guitar" on the radio and could sing along with it on the radio, but I wasn't a true fan.  I heard about this song because it was leaked, yes leaked.  So what did Taylor do?  She decided to release it early.  Genius.  And of course her plan worked.  Her third album "Speak Now" was hugely successful.

Who was this song about?
Taylor told Yahoo music in 2010, "This is a situation where a guy that I just barely knew put his arm around me by the water, and I saw the entire relationship flash before my eyes."

Who was this person?

It may be a little confusing because the hidden word in "Mine" is TOBY, but it is really about Cory Monteith.  (Toby Hemingway was in the music video for "Mine".  She couldn't have wrote it about him because she didn't know him until after she wrote the song when she was filming the music video.  She may have included his name because he was in the music video and/or she was interested in him)  Taylor and Cory hung out from January 2010 to about April 2010.  They even went bowling together with Selena Gomez.  They became good friends.  Unfortunately it didn't work out.

Taylor told Yahoo music, "After I wrote the song, things sort of fell apart, as things so often do. And I hadn't talked to him in a couple months. And the song came out, and that day, I got an e-mail from him. And I was like, 'Yes!' Because that one was sort of half-confession and half-prediction or projection of what I saw."

She was scared of him, scared of what could have been.

"It's a song that's about my tendency to run from love. Every really direct example of love I've had in front of me has ended in goodbye and in breakups and things like that, so I've developed this pattern of running away when it comes time to fall in love and stay in a relationship and this song is about finding an exception to that and finding the person that makes you believe in love and realize that it can work out."

This is what she imagined if she hadn't been scared. The song tells the story of a couple meeting. The boy  was in college, th girl. a waitress.  They fall in love, "You put your arm around me for the first time." They fight, "And I remember that fight, 2:30 a.m." They make up and he says, "I'll never leave you alone."  The music video further elaborates on this theme showing them moving in together, getting married, and having children.  One day Taylor I hope you find the person that doesn't make you afraid and you can have a great life with them.

*I couldn't write this post without addressing Cory's death.  It was a sad day especially for Taylor.  I know how she feels.  When friends of mine have passed away it is very hard, very hard.  I hope that all his family and friends and Taylor have experienced comfort with his passing and remember all the good times they had with him.

Sweeter Than Fiction Lyrics

"Sweeter Than Fiction" Lyrics

Hit the ground, hit the ground, hit the ground (oh, oh)

Only sound, only sound that you hear is "no"
You never saw it coming
Except when you started runnning
And now you come undone (I, I, I)

Seen you fall, seen you crawl on you knees (eh, eh)
Seen you lost in a crowd, seen you colors fade
Wish I could make it better
Someday you won't remember,
This pain you thought would last forever and ever

[Chorus]
There you stand, ten feet tall
I will say, "I knew it all along"
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction

Just a shot, just a shot in the dark (oh, oh)
All you got, all you got are your shattered hopes
They never saw it coming
You hit the ground running
And now you're on to something
I, I, I say

What a sight, what a sight when the light came on
Put me right, threw me right when you put them front
And in this perfect weather
It's like we don't remember
The rain we thought would last forever and ever

[Chorus]
There you stand, ten feet tall
I will say, "I knew it all along"
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction

There you stand, next to me
All at once, the rest is history
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction, fiction

[Bridge]
I’ll be one of the many saying
Look at you now, look at you now, now
I’ll be one of the many saying
You've made us proud, you’ve made us proud

I’ll be one of the many saying
Look at you now, look at you now, now
I’ll be one of the many saying
You've made us proud, you've made us proud, proud

And when they call your name
And they put your picture in a frame
You know that I’ll be there time and again
'Cause I loved you when

When you hit the ground, hit the ground, hit the ground, oh oh
Only sound, only sound that you heard was "no"
Now in this perfect weather
It's like we don't remember
The rain we thought would last forever and ever

[Chorus]
There you stand, ten feet tall
I will say, "I knew it all along"
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction

There you stand, next to me
All at once, the rest is history
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction, fiction
