Sweeter Than Fiction Lyrics

"Sweeter Than Fiction" Lyrics

Hit the ground, hit the ground, hit the ground (oh, oh)

Only sound, only sound that you hear is "no"
You never saw it coming
Except when you started runnning
And now you come undone (I, I, I)

Seen you fall, seen you crawl on you knees (eh, eh)
Seen you lost in a crowd, seen you colors fade
Wish I could make it better
Someday you won't remember,
This pain you thought would last forever and ever

[Chorus]
There you stand, ten feet tall
I will say, "I knew it all along"
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction

Just a shot, just a shot in the dark (oh, oh)
All you got, all you got are your shattered hopes
They never saw it coming
You hit the ground running
And now you're on to something
I, I, I say

What a sight, what a sight when the light came on
Put me right, threw me right when you put them front
And in this perfect weather
It's like we don't remember
The rain we thought would last forever and ever

[Chorus]
There you stand, ten feet tall
I will say, "I knew it all along"
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction

There you stand, next to me
All at once, the rest is history
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction, fiction

[Bridge]
I’ll be one of the many saying
Look at you now, look at you now, now
I’ll be one of the many saying
You've made us proud, you’ve made us proud

I’ll be one of the many saying
Look at you now, look at you now, now
I’ll be one of the many saying
You've made us proud, you've made us proud, proud

And when they call your name
And they put your picture in a frame
You know that I’ll be there time and again
'Cause I loved you when

When you hit the ground, hit the ground, hit the ground, oh oh
Only sound, only sound that you heard was "no"
Now in this perfect weather
It's like we don't remember
The rain we thought would last forever and ever

[Chorus]
There you stand, ten feet tall
I will say, "I knew it all along"
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction

There you stand, next to me
All at once, the rest is history
Your eyes are wider than distance
This life is sweeter than fiction, fiction

Sad Beautiful Tragic

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "Sad Beautiful Tragic" from her Red album.

At first I thought this song might have been about Jake Gyllenhaal, the hint in the song was WHILE YOU WERE ON A TRAIN.  Over the last few weeks I've gained some more insight to this song, specifically from Taylor.

She didn't perform this song until September 8th, the last month of her Red USA tour.  And then she performed it the very last night of her Red tour.  The reason she didn't perform it before and performed it the last night is it is a song that is REALLY special to her.  She even tweeted about performing it live, and she doesn't normally do that.  If it was a song about Jake, she wouldn't have had so much reservation about performing it and she wouldn't have saved it til the last night of her tour when her fans were begging her to perform, "Tied Together With A Smile".

"What a sad, beautiful, tragic love affair..." Live in St. Paul, MN: http://t.co/6UR6OezRga
— Taylor Swift (@taylorswift13) September 9, 2013

Taylor said in her stories behind the red songs, "Sad Beautiful Tragic is a song that wrote while I was on tour. It was just reflecting on something that was lost, and you can't get it back."

What was lost?

Taylor and Austin Swift
Her parents love, her parents have separated and/or divorced.  I don't really know all the details, and don't need to know, but this song is about their love..

That's why it means so much to her, why she had hesitations about performing it, and why she performed it at her finale concert.

On September 8th in St. Paul Minnesota she said, "This is a song that I wrote about how just because something is over doesn't mean it wasn't incredibly beautiful.  Cause another lesson I've learned is that not all stories have a happy ending and you have to learn how to deal with that. This is a song about a story that didn't end so happily, but it was still supposed to happen.  This is called, Sad Beautiful Tragic."

She has had to learn how to deal with her parents not being together.

On September 21, 2013 Taylor said in her introduction to this song, "It's [Red] an album I'm really proud of and I'm so glad you welcomed it into your life. On the last night of the Red tour I kind of want to play a song from Red that I never really play, but it's a song that really means a lot to me because a lot of the time when you think about love you think about how it has to have a happy ending for it to count but this is a song that I wrote about a love that didn't have a happy ending, but it was still worth writing about, and it's worth singing about. This is called Sad Beautiful Tragic."

Like Taylor said, her parents marriage was supposed to happen.  Taylor and Austin would not have been born, and Taylor still loves both her parents.  This song means alot to me too.  My parents are divorced and things were not always amicable between them, but I love them both dearly.  My dad passed away and there is a giant hole in my heart.  I don't regret that they got together, but rather celebrate it like Taylor does. I am both of them, both of them are part of me.

"distance, timIng, breakdowN, fighting
silence, the train runs off its tracks
kiss me, try to fix it
could you just try to listen?
hang up, give up and for the life of us
we can't get back..."

Distance, timing, breakdown, fighting, silence.  They were the driving factors in her parents split.  They couldn't make up.  But in spite of that they had "a beautiful magic love". You can't always get happily ever after back, but the journey of love and what it brings is worth it.

Sweeter Than Fiction

Today's Taylor Swift song is "Sweeter Than Fiction", a song that she wrote for the movie "One Chance" about Britain's Got Talent winner Paul Potts.  It debuted at the Toronto Film Festival September 9th, 2013.

I just heard a snippet of this song. Love it! Here's hoping it will be released tomorrow.  If not we have to wait til October.

Why did she write this song?

Taylor told City News, "I'm very inspired by the concept of love, and this movie is in a lot of ways a love story. You're expecting to go in and see a story of someone who makes his dreams come true, but what you don't realize is you're actually being told a story of this unconditional love that his wife has for him, his girlfriend has for him. That was the story that hit me and really affected me, so I wanted to tell a story musically from that perspective."

Here are some of the lyrics, “There you stand, take me down, I will say I knew it all along Your eyes are wider than distance, this love is sweeter than fiction."

Can't wait to hear the whole song Taylor!!

Stay Beautiful

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "Stay Beautiful" from her Taylor Swift album.

Who is this song about?

Taylor says his name in the song, CORY.  The song begins by saying "Cory's eyes are like a jungle", his "smiles are like the radio".  "There's pretty girls on every corner/That watch him as he's walking home/Saying, does he know/Will you ever know/You're beautiful". This guy is amazing.  What I really love about this song is Taylor's faith in him, "You're really gonna be someone".  She hopes that "your life leads you back to my door".  What an amazing song for her to write about a boy she knew when she was so young.  She knew him in the 4th grade.  I don't know if I had that kind of insight or faith about people in the 4th grade.

In her 2011 target commercial for her Speak Now album Taylor says,  "So I suppose it all started with my first crush in 4th grade. Cory Robertson. Yeah, he liked the cool girl. She had straight hair. Little did he know, I was writing songs about him after school. Dreaming of one day becoming a country singer. Or, maybe a poet. Or, a professional basketball player. Well, eventually I found my way. For me, 'Speak Now' is the next chapter in my story, and I'm naming names."

Cory Robertson, one of Taylor Swift's first crushes
Cory was one of Taylor's first crushes, but he didn't know and didn't like her back.  Too bad for him. This story reminds me of the time when I was in 4th grade and a boy name Cory Jackson had the hugest crush on me.  He was crazy, he followed me home one day just to see where I lived, and I lived a mile from the school in the opposite direction of him. Then one time he threw a pencil at my neck.  He tortured me relentlessly, but alas that is how 10 year old boys show their affection.

Even though nothing happened because of this crush a wonderful song came out of it. On her website Taylor says "After hearing my songs, a lot of people ask me, `How many boyfriends have you HAD?' And I always tell them that more of my songs come from observation than actual experience. In other words, you don't have to date someone to write a song about them. This is a song I wrote about a guy I never dated! Wow, right? Haha. This song is about a guy I thought was cute, and never really talked to him much. But something about him inspired this song, just watching him."

What a fun song about an elementary school crush!

Stay Stay Stay

Today's Taylor Swift song is "Stay Stay Stay" from her "Red" album.

Who is this song about?

It's not about a specific person, from her liner notes Taylor was "DAYDREAMING ABOUT REAL LOVE."

Taylor says in her stories behind the songs interview, "The song 'Stay Stay Stay' is a song that I wrote based on what I've seen of real relationships, where it's not perfect, there are moments where you're just so sick of that person, you get into a stupid fight. It's still worth it to stay in it. There's something about it that you can't live without. In the bridge it says, 'I'd like to hang out with you for my whole life' and I think that's what probably the key to finding the one, you just want to hang out with them forever."

In the song she gets mad at her boyfriend, throws her "phone against the room" at him, but even with all this anger he decides to stay.  He stays and keeps doing the things that she likes about him, "carry my groceries", taking "the time to memorize me" and she just likes "hanging out" with him.

I really hope that Taylor finds this true love.  I have found this love, and have been married to him for 7 years.  It is hard sometimes and things don't always go as planned, but when you have something special, it is so worth it to "stay stay stay".

"Last Kiss"

Today's Taylor Swift song is "Last Kiss" from her Speak Now album.

This song tells the story of a great love and how the boy just left and she doesn't understand why.  How she never thought their last kiss would be their last kiss, "I never thought we'd have a last kiss/Never imagined we'd end like this."

Who is this song about?

The hint comes in the liner notes, FOREVER AND ALWAYS.  "Forever and Always" was the name of a song from Taylor's "Fearless" album and that song was about Joe Jonas.  "Last Kiss" is about Joe Jonas!

Taylor said on her website, "The song 'Last Kiss' is sort of like a letter to somebody. You say all of these desperate, hopeless feelings that you have after a breakup. Going through a breakup you feel all of these different things. You feel anger, and you feel confusion, and frustration. Then there is the absolute sadness. The sadness of losing this person, losing all the memories, and the hopes you had for the future. There are times when you have this moment of truth where you just admit to yourself that you miss all these things. When I was in one of those moments I wrote this song."

She treasured their love, was so excited for it, "I do recall now the smell of the rain/I ran off the plane/The beat of your heart/It jumps through your shirt/I can still feel your arms." She contrasts this with sitting "on the floor/Wearing your clothes/All that I know is/I don't know how to be something you miss/I never thought we'd have a last kiss/Never imagined we'd end like this/Your name, forever the name on my lips."  What she had with Joe Jonas was special, but he didn't treasure it like she did. She "never planned on you [Joe] changing your mind." He did change his mind and in the moment she wrote this song she missed him.  For the story of their breakup, check out "Forever and Always".

"Tied Together With a Smile"

Today's Taylor Swift song is "Tied Together With a Smile" from her debut album, Taylor Swift.

Who is this song about?

It's about one of her best friends. The reason she wrote it is sad and it illustrates the struggles so many girls go through while growing up.

On her website Taylor said, "One of my best friends is absolutely beautiful. She goes to beauty pageants and wins everything. Girls want to be her and guys want to be with her. I wrote this song the day I found out about her eating disorder. It completely blew my mind, and this one was tough to write, because I wasn't just telling some sad story. This was real. This song is basically about the girls I know, and the difficult things I saw them go through. I've never seen this song as a lecture. It's really about how no matter what my friends go through, I'm always going to love them."

The song is about how her friend is doing this for a boy, and trying to fake her way through it. She's only "Tied Together With a Smile" and she's "coming undone" and cries, but doesn't "tell anyone". She offers some comforting words to her friend at the beginning of the song. She says "Seems the only one who doesn't see your beauty/Is the face in the mirror looking back at you/You walk around here thinking you're not pretty/But that's not true, cause I know you..."

Click here for lyrics to the song, "Tied Together With a Smile".

I definitely know how her friend feels.  I felt that way all the time in high school/middle school, not pretty enough, good enough etc.  It seemed like the boys never noticed me and if I could just do something different they would.  I tried to be happy, but a lot of times I was crying inside and had no one to talk to.  It was horrible.  Absolutely horrible.  But fortunately I came out of it, graduated high school, and went to college.  While in college I found myself, found the confidence I needed.  I wasn't perfectly healed, but so much more than when I was in those formidable years.  I realized that I was fine being me, just the way I was.  I found a perfect guy who thinks that too.  I am so glad Taylor wrote this song.  It really lets girls know that they are special, they don't need to do things to make guys like them. They just need to realize their beauty themselves and realize the face staring back at them in the mirror is beautiful.

"Everything Has Changed" Music Video

Taylor just released the video for her song, "Everything Has Changed".  This video features a little boy and girl, that resemble Taylor and Ed Sheeran.  They do a ton of stuff together and are best friends.  I won't surprise the ending, but this may be one of her first videos where she is hardly in it. It is cutest video ever! (I've decided to include my take on this video below the video, so I don't spoil it and you can read it after you watch.)

Click here for the meaning to the song, "Everything Has Changed".

The theme for this video is based on "The Notebook" a novel and movie by Nicholas Sparks.  The novel is about two kids that spend their summers together, fall in love, meet when they get older, overcome giant obstacles and fall in love for forever. In the novel there is not much description of what their childhood romance was like.  This music video gives a glimpse of what this young love could have been like.  It is not the same setting, the setting in the novel is a summer at the beach and the setting for the video is a day at school, but the concept of young love and soul mates is very apparent in this video, as it was in the book.

The music video features mini me's of Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran innocently enjoying all the activities of youth.  I wonder if some of the activities they participate in were some of Ed and Taylor's when they were young.  Here is the chronology of events in the music video:
  • It starts out with Taylor's mini getting on the school bus, where she sees the mini Ed.
  • They make cookies at school. Taylor's is nice and pretty and Ed's is a ... mess.
  • They are in a school play where Taylor dubs Ed a knight, and then they are on a playground.
  • They are in the band room. All the kids are wild, except mini Ed and Taylor. Mini Ed is playing the guitar with mini Taylor watching.
  • They are in PE class, doing Yoga by themselves, while the rest of the class is playing soccer.
  • They are in class watching movies. Mini Ed and Taylor sneak off to look a snake, build forts, hang out in the library, sew (Taylor), draw (Ed), wander the halls, color on themselves with markers, read (Ed) the Notebook outside (gotta include the reference), play with an origami bird made of leaves (Ed).
  • Taylor uses a lego device to give Ed a fake tattoo.
  • Taylor dances while Ed draws.
  • In separate locations, they share Ipod art with one another.
  • The climax of the video is a dance in the middle of the gym between mini Ed and Taylor.
  • At the end of the video they meet their parents or siblings, big Ed and Taylor dressed much like their min me's.  Taylor is wearing a white dress, her mini me is wearing one too and Ed is wearing a black shirt and jeans, just like his mini me.  The real Taylor and Ed share a glance and a smile, then go their separate ways.
This video really shows and portrays the innocence of young love, before everything becomes so complicated. Who knows what these two have in store for them and if they will find their true soul mates as easily as they did in childhood. I hope they do!

PS. For those of you who want to get the backpack Taylor's mini me is carrying.

Speak Now

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of the song "Speak Now" from her Speak Now album.

This song inspired the name of her third album Speak Now. Taylor tells The Boot in November 2010 "I've always been fascinated by that moment, in a wedding because I think it's a metaphor for a lot of times in our life when we're just about to do something, and that's when we realize that we want it, and that's when we realize that we have to speak up."  This song is not about Taylor, but about one of her close friends.  Who is it?

Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler

Her friend Kellie Pickler!  Taylor says in an exclusive E! News interview, "She [Kellie Pickler] one day comes in and tells me, "He's getting married." He had met this girl who was this horrible mean person who made him like completely stop talking to all of his friends, cut off his family, had him so completely isolated. And I just kind of randomly was like "Huh, are you going to speak now?"  She's like, 'What do you mean?' 'You know like storm the church? Speak now or forever hold your peace? I'll go with you, I'll play guitar."

"The song was inspired by the idea of bursting into your ex-boyfriend's wedding and saying 'Don't do it'-which was originally inspired by one of my friends and the fact that the guy she had been in love with since childhood was marrying this other girl," she explained to me. "And my first inclination was to say, 'Well, are you gonna speak now?' And then I started thinking about what I would do if I was still in love with someone who was marrying someone who they shouldn't be marrying. And so I wrote this song about exactly what my game plan would be..

The secret message in this song is, YOU ALWAYS REGRET WHAT YOU DON'T SAY.  You definitely regret what you don't say.  I love this album because it is all about speaking your mind and letting those around you know how you feel.

A bit of trivia, Taylor also wrote another song with Kellie, "The Best Days of Your Life."  Taylor plays the guitar in the music video and sings back up vocals.

Kellie told AOL, "Taylor Swift and I actually wrote this song together while we were on tour with Brad Paisley. I had went through a really bad break-up a while back, so we wrote the song about the relationship that went sour. It's so funny, because Taylor always says that she has the 'Picture to Burn' song and Carrie Underwood has 'Before He Cheats' ... and now 'Best Days Of Your Life' - that's my kiss off song! He [my ex] has heard it and so has the person he's with now, so I guess it's bittersweet."

Mary's Song (Oh My My)

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "Mary's Song (Oh My My)" from her Taylor Swift album.

Who is this song about?

It is about Taylor's neighbors in Nashville, Tennessee who she saw all the time and were a great example of a good relationship and marriage. In the song she starts out when the couple was just seven and nine.  Their "daddies used to joke about the two of us/Growing up and falling in love".  Then they got older and the girl was sixteen and their "daddies used to joke about the two of us" but "they never believed we'd really fall in love". The couple stared dating, had some fights, he proposed, they got married, they had babies and suddenly they are eighty seven and eighty-nine. After each verse the line "oh my my my" is repeated to symbolize the relationship.  Oh my my my, it is quite an achievement to be together like that for so long.

Click here for lyrics to the song, "Mary's Song (Oh My My)"

Taylor said on her website, "I wrote this song about a couple who lived next door to us. They'd been married forever and they came over one night for dinner, and were just so cute. They were talking about how they fell in love and got married, and how they met when they were just little kids. I thought it was so sweet, because you can go to the grocery store and read the tabloids, and see who's breaking up and cheating on each other (or just listen to some of my songs, haha). But it was really comforting to know that all I had to do was go home and look next door to see a perfect example of forever."

I hope that Taylor can find love like this some day.

Never Grow Up

Today's Taylor Swift song is "Never Grow Up" from her Speak Now album.

When I first heard this song I did not relate to it as well, but the more I hear it the more I understand.  It made me think of a little baby growing up and the mom not wanting the baby to grow up.  I think it is amazing Taylor has such great insight because she does not have kids, but she really sees how it is from the perspective of a parent.

Who is this song about?

It is about Taylor! The secret hint is "MOVED OUT IN JULY".  She moved out from her parents house July 2010.

In the first verse she talks about a little baby, "Your little hand's wrapped around my finger".  The second verse, the child is 14, "You're in the car on the way to the movies/And you're mortified your mom's dropping you off/But don't make her drop you off around the block/Remember that she's getting older too".  She then starts talking about herself in the middle part of the song, "Take pictures in your mind of your childhood room/Memorize what it sounded like when your dad gets home".  She mentions her little brother, "remember the words said/And all your little brother's favorite songs".  And then mentions herself, "I just realized everything I have is someday gonna be gone".  The next verse she is "in my new apartment/In a big city, they just dropped me off/It's so much colder that I thought it would be/So I tuck myself in and turn my night light on".  She realizes it is not like home, it is scary, "Oh I don't wanna grow up, wish I'd never grown up/I could still be little/Oh I don't wanna grow up, wish I'd never grown up It could still be simple".  Then she brings the song away from herself again.  "Don't you ever grow up, it could stay this simple/Won't let nobody hurt you/Won't let no one break your heart."

Taylor said on her website, "'Never Grow Up' is a song about the fact that I don't quite know how I feel about growing up. It's tricky. Growing up happens without you knowing it. Growing up is such a crazy concept because a lot of times when you were younger you wish you were older. I look out into a crowd every night and I see a lot of girls that are my age and going through exactly the same things as I'm going through. Every once in a while I look down and I see a little girl who is seven or eight, and I wish I could tell her all of this. There she is becoming who she is going to be and forming her thoughts and dreams and opinions. I wrote this song for those little girls."

What is her home like?

Taylor told Rolling stone, "It's going to be my fantasy world. The ceiling of my living room is painted like the night sky. There's a pond in the living room ... The pond is a moat around the fireplace and may possibly have koi fish in it. You step on a stepping stone in the pond in order to get on a spiral staircase, which takes you up to the human-sized bird cage observatory. They're delivering a human-size birdcage, which I'll put a brass telescope in."

Rolling Stone was invited into her apartment in 2012 and described it in an article on her. "There is a pond, complete with koi fish, in the middle of Swift's astonishing, many-colored Nashville condo. It sits beneath a wrought-metal spiral staircase leading to a human-size birdcage that faces floor-to-ceiling windows, with a view stretching to the green mountains beyond downtown. ('It's the most comfortable place in the world,' she says of the wooden cage, built from a sketch she made. 'It's just, like, pillows and comfiness.')

Under the previous owner, this was an ultramodern bachelor pad. Over 18 months of remodeling, Swift gave the condo a sex change and a heavy dose of well-funded OCD whimsy. The ceiling is arranged in multiple motifs – billowing curtains here, a painted indigo night sky there. In one corner, under hanging crystalline stars, sits a giant bunny made of moss. He's wearing a hat. 'It's a whole Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland structure here,' she says, welcoming me the next morning. 'It's what the inside of my brain looks like, essentially.' "

She told Jay Leno November 23, 2010 all about her new life, living on her own.

"I moved in the beginning of the summer. I've been working on this condo in Nasvhille about a year, doing construction. When I walked in, it was really trendy, and I eventually fell in love with it. But the inside of it was like a dude's bachelor ... and I was like, we need to change this and make it cozy and pretty and mismatched! So we ripped out everything [and] put in like barn, hardwood floors, old reclaimed brick ... And the kitchen! Oh my God, I love my kitchen! It's got mismatched colored cabinets and mismatched knobs on cabinets and mismatched chairs ... but it's very girly, and they're well-matched mismatched! There's lots of pillows everywhere."

"I love cooking. It's one of my favorite things to do. And now I have my own kitchen -- so now I can! And I make my bed everyday! [laughs] I didn't used to do that, back when I lived at home. My mom comes over now, and she'll walk in and be like, 'Wow ... so you do this now? You didn't do this before, but you do this now. Great.' [laughs]"

"Because that would be dude-like ... so I was contemplating not having any TVs in my place at all. I was like, do I really need a TV? And then at the end, I realized I did. But I put it in this contraption that I found online, where you can have it hidden, and then have it come up when you want to see it. Because it's a very antique kind of apartment, so I thought, I can't have a big TV mounted on the wall! It would ruin everything. So I had to hide it ...and you push a button, so it comes up! Sometimes when I'm alone, I'll push up, down ... up, down! [laughs] You can do that when you're alone-- and nobody's gonna judge you! [laughs]"

Here's a peek inside her house.

It is scary to grow up and move out on your own.  I was 18 when I moved out and my aunt dropped me off at school.  It was for college.  I wondered how I would fit in, how it would be.  It ended up being one of the best experiences of my life.  Taylor's been moved out for a while now and I think she is enjoying it, even if it does come with heartbreak and loneliness sometimes, that's part of growing up.

*On a side note, I have now been to one of her houses, in NYC.  It was a amazing and she was a perfect host. Taylor thanks for being so nice and opening your homes to fans!

Hey Stephen

Today's Taylor Swift song is "Hey Stephen" from her Fearless album.

Who is this song about?

Well it's not that hard to guess the first name of the guy, it's STEPHEN (which by the way is the first name of my charming husband, except he spells it with a v.)  His full name is Stephen Barker Liles and he plays in a country music band called, Love and Theft.

Taylor tells Philadelphia magazine November 2008, "This is a guy I had a crush on. I wrote about all these reasons he should be with me instead of other girls."  In the song she says, "Hey Stephen I could give you fifty reasons why I should be the one you choose/All those other girls, well they're beautiful but would they write a song for you".  But she is too shy to tell him how she feels, "Hey Stephen, I know looks can be deceiving but I know I saw a light in you/As we walked we were talking and I didn't say half the things I wanted to."  But she can tell him in the song, " 'cause I can't help it if you look like an angel/Can't help I if I wanna kiss you in the rain so/Come feel this magic I've been feeling since I met you/Can't help it if there's no one else/I'm waiting alone now so come on and come out and pull me near."

Taylor tells New York Times during "Screen Test:Taylor Swift" December 9, 2009, "When I write songs I don't hesitate to put names in the songs because that's how I deal with life. I had an awesome experience with this last record, with this song called 'Hey Stephen'.  This was a guy who opened up a couple shows for me on tour.  It was just you know, talked to him a couple times, we'd hang out at catering or whatever.  It was never anything, like he would ever know that I liked him.  I don't ever confess that sort in real life, but I really do like to confess it in this fantasy music life that I get to live.  So I wrote this song called 'Hey Stephen' and I sent Stephen a text message and I was like 'Hey, track 5'."

What was his reaction to the song?

Stephen tells Planet Verge, “Taylor called me up and was like, ‘Hey I wrote a song about you,’  and I got a little nervous because I didn't know if that was a good or bad thing, But after hearing the song, it was definitely one of the sweetest things anyone has ever done for me.”

That is not the end of the story, it seems Stephen had some reciprocal feelings for Taylor.  "You know what’s funny about that whole thing is that I actually wrote a song for Taylor at the same time that she wrote ‘Hey Stephen’ for me. So when Taylor called me [back in 2008] and told me about the song she wrote for me I actually was like ‘ That’s really funny because I wrote a song about you too,' It was a weird moment because I wasn't expecting her to say she wrote a song for me and I think it was a mutual thing on her end too, but she asked me what the words were so I only told her a little bit. I was like, ‘This world is goin’ crazy, but baby what do you say we try to make it anyway?’ And that was that.”

At first he wasn't going to release the song he wrote. He told Planet Verge, "No, but I probably should make one. It’s really one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. Taylor is such an awesome girl, and I’ve had a lot of family and friends tell me that they think I should put it out for people to hear, so I’ll have to get on that soon.” He finally released it, "Try to Make it Anyway" in 2011, he said, "Planet Verge has been good to us, this whole experience with the song was just fun too. I did the recording in the studio I have in my house and filmed the video in my backyard–in my barn actually, which my buddy Aaron Thomas helped me out with all of that. I really just love songwriting and this song has become one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written.”

Nothing ever happened between the two, but what a cute story.  They both made songs for each other.

This is a great revenge song.  What is worse than your boyfriend breaking up with you?  Your boyfriend breaking up with you because he's dating another girl!

Who is this song about?
Taylor tells the story in the song. "The story starts when it was hot and it was summer and.../I had it all, I had him right where I wanted him/She came along, got him alone and let's hear the applause/She took him faster than you could say 'sabotage' ".  Taylor started dating Joe Jonas in July 2008, but was in for a surprise   Camilla Belle unexpectedly pulled Joe Jonas out from under Taylor Swift's nose. They met when he was filming his music video for "Lovebug".  She "never saw it coming, wouldn't have suspected it/I underestimated just who I was dealing with". He broke up with her in October 2008 and started dating Camilla.  Joe broke it off with Taylor and she was confused and heartbroken, see the song "Forever and Always".

But Taylor has something to say to Ms Camilla Belle, "go stand in the corner and think about what you did". And to everyone else, "She's not a saint/And she's not what you think/She's an actress, whoa", "Stealing other people's toys/On the playground won't/Make you many friends", "Or pushing people down it gets you where you wanna go."  She is letting her know (and the whole world, ie the revenge part) she did not appreciate her for stealing him and is helping her learn her lesson.  "They wouldn't teach you that in prep school so it's up to me...There is nothing I do better than revenge"

It didn't last for Camilla and Joe, what does when you start it like that?  They broke up in July 2009.

Breathe

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "Breathe" from her "Fearless" album.

Taylor collaborated with Colbie Caillat on this song. Colbie's voice blends perfectly with Taylor's and adds a lot to the song.

From the lyrics it would seem like it was a break up song about a boy, but it is not about a boy.

"And we know it's never simple/Never easy./Never a clean break, noone here to save me./You're the only thing I know like the back of my hand/And I can't/Breathe/Without you/But I have to."

It is about a good friend of Taylor's, Emily Poe, "It's two a.m./Feelin' like I just lost a friend./Hope you know it's not easy/Easy for me".   Emily toured with Taylor for two years as her fiddle player.  It is not exactly known why she left the band, but she left it in 2008 and went to law school at the University of Tennessee.  It was hard for Taylor to see her go.

In a conversation with Colbie Caillat in the "Making of Breathe" video Taylor says:

Taylor: "It was total therapy because I came in and I was like look you know one of my best friends, I'm going to not have to see anymore and is not going to be part of what I do and it's like the hardest thing to go through.  It's crazy listening to the song because you'd think it'd be about a relationship, but it's really about losing a friend and having a fallout, just the loss."

Colbie: "It can relate to anyone, anything."

Taylor: "It does, it's never specific as to why, that's my favorite thing about it, it doesn't talk about why or who's fault it was because sometimes the hardest time of when you say goodbye it's nobodies fault. It just has to stop."

While Taylor never says exactly why it didn't work out she says it couldn't be helped, there were too many obstacles. "Never wanted this, never wanna see you hurt./Every little bump in the road I tried to swerve./But people are people/And sometimes it doesn't work out."

I can relate to Taylor. It's a subject I've thought about, but not much is written on, how best friendships are really relationships at times.  When you date a boy you can just break up, but when things don't work out with a best girlfriend, you don't just end it in the same way. I've had some friendships that just turned toxic after a while and you just have to take a breather.  No one is right or wrong, the friendship just needs to "breathe" for a minute to work out the problems. Sometimes you can be friends with the person again and sometimes it just wouldn't work out if you tried again. You just have to say goodbye.

She apologizes at the end of the song in a string of "Sorry's" which also happens to be the hidden message in the song, IM SORRY IM SORRY IM SORRY.  It is hard to say goodbye to a best friend, but sometimes it is the best thing for everyone even though it's no one's fault.

Red

Today's Taylor Swift song is the meaning of "Red" from her "Red" album.

This song is the title song from the album and does a good job describing what the album is about, a lot of intense emotion.  In her Good Morning America introduction she said, “I wrote this song about the fact that some things in life are just hard to forget… because the emotions that are involved with them can be so intense—and to me, intense emotion is red.”  She does a really good job at capturing the intensity of emotion felt when loving someone and the isolation and longing after losing someone you have loved so much. It is such a fun song.  A good mix of country and pop.  In the song Taylor describes as loving a certain guy as "Red" and losing him is like "Blue".  It has a fun and catchy tune.

Taylor also says, "Red is a song that I wrote halfway through making this album and it changed what this album became. This song is about correlating different emotions to different colors.  It hit me all of the sudden that most of the emotions I felt in this process of making this album were red emotions, all the intense ones, at the happy and angry end of the spectrum and it really changed my outlook on where this record was going because to me this song is very different, very descriptive.  It has an edge to it that to me kind of expanded what I wanted to do."

Who is this song about?

I had a little doubt who this song was about and was waffling back and forth between two people.  I thought it could be Eddie Redmayne.  She was known to have a crush on him. "Come Back, Be Here" is about him. And his name has "Red" in it, and he was in a play called "Red" and a movie called "Powder Blue". But I didn't know if they actually dated.  He seemed to confirm it the other day when he said it was "absolute nonsense" that he and Taylor had dated.  Unless he is hiding a secret romance, I don't think this song is about him.  Then who is this song about?  It is about...well who have all the songs been about on this album?  Jake Gyllenhaal. She fell for him hard and this song describes what she felt like as she was trying to get over him.

I love the imagery in this song, "Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street/Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending so suddenly".  Maserati's are racing cars, if you are driving one down a dead end street then it wouldn't be very fun. (Side note, my husband did say it would be fun if the street was very long). Taylor is saying, the romance was so fun and so promising, but all of the sudden it was over and your ride in the Maserati was done because you came to the end of the road.  Like the end of the racing road your relationship road has come to and end.

She then references the colors of autumn saying, "Like the colors in autumn so bright just before they lose it all".  Fall is so pretty, and the colors are amazing.  She dated Jake when she was in New York and they did go upstate to pick apples and probably drove through all the beautiful colors.  I've been in New York this fall/winter and the fall was amazing, the colors were beautiful, but then Hurricane Sandy came and took them away and it has been pretty bleak.  Her relationship was as beautiful as those colors, but like the autumn leaves, the colors faded and it was no more.

She then compares the relationship/breakup to certain colors.  "Loving him was red/Losing him was blue/Missing him was dark grey."  I can really imagine all those colors because I've been through it too.  Love is vibrant and wonderful, you absolutely love the person with all your being, breaking up is certainly blue, you look back and just wonder why, what went wrong, and being alone, missing him is very grey, you sit alone at your house remembering all the fun, red, vibrant things you did with him.  It must have been hard for Taylor, she broke up with him in the winter and the whole world was grey too, just like her.

This song illustrates the pain and regret that can come when you see how good love can be and then lose it. "Regretting him was like wishing you never found out that love could be that strong."  I hope Taylor finds this red intense love again and is able to hold on to it forever.
